GUIDE FOR ADOPTING A BELGIAN TERVUREN

What Is The Purpose Of Belgian Tervuren Rescue?

The main goal of Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. is to act on behalf of any homeless Belgian Tervuren.  To attain this goal, Belgian Tervuren Rescue will remove dogs which are unwanted, impounded, neglected or abused from their unpleasant situation and place all adoptable dogs in responsible, permanent homes.  Belgian Tervuren Rescue will provide temporary foster care, basic health care and temperament evaluation prior to placement to ensure an optimal match for the dog as well as the adopter.  Rescue volunteers will also provide training and education to the new owners of adopted Tervuren to ensure the success of the placement.

Where Do Rescue Tervs Come From?

Most abandoned or unwanted Tervs became that way through no fault of their own.  A large percentage of Tervuren in need of rescue are dogs owned by individuals that are no longer willing or able to keep them.  The reasons are varied and include changes in the family unit (divorce, new baby, etc.), the dog’s behavior cannot be properly managed, or, the family’s priorities change and no longer include the dog.  Another large percentage of Tervuren in need of rescue are either turned into animal shelters or are picked up as strays.  Most Belgian Tervuren which end up in the rescue program are between one and five years of age.  It is very rare for a puppy less than a year old to be involved in the Belgian Tervuren Rescue program. There is no upper age limit for dogs that are accepted into the program.

Can A Rescue Terv Adjust to a New Home?  Will It Bond As Well As A Puppy?

Absolutely!  The Rescue Program would not be able to exist if rescued Tervuren couldn’t successfully adjust to a new home and family.  Adult dogs that are placed into loving homes develop a strong bond with their new family - just as strong as if it had been raised from puppyhood.  In fact, there are many advantages to adopting a grown dog instead of a puppy:

They’re already housebroken and past the destructive stage

They’ve grown as big as they’re going to get

The quality of their temperament is already seen

What About Temperament?

Most rescue dogs have stable, loving temperaments.  Some dogs may have a higher energy level than others and some may not do well with young children or cats.  Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. is obligated to provide people with healthy Tervuren and of good temperament.  The program will not knowingly place a Tervuren for adoption with a temperament problem that can’t be dealt with by average training methods.

Are Rescue Dogs Healthy?

Prior to adoption, all Tervuren in the Belgian Tervuren Rescue program will be current on vaccinations, free from parasites, and spayed/neutered.  On occasion, a rescue dog that has been badly abused or neglected may still be in the recovery stage at the time it is placed but the new adopter will have full knowledge of the care requirements necessary for rehabilitation.  Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc. cannot guarantee the health of rescue dogs. However, dogs with chronic health problems or conditions that would be cost-prohibitive to cure, cannot be completely cured, and/or which would cause long-term financial strain or stress to a new owner will not be placed.

How Do I Adopt A Rescue Tervuren Through Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc.?

Potential adopters are requested to fill out a Belgian Tervuren Rescue Adoption Form.  This form may be downloaded using the link at the top of this page and mailed to Cindy Simonsen, W4163 Cty ES, Elkhorn, WI 53121.   It also is available from the BTRI volunteer staff by e-mail and regular mail.  Potential adoptive homes will be screened and references will be checked. The best possible match will be made between the dogs available and adoptive homes.  Prior to placement, all new adoptive homes are required to sign an adoption contract which specifies the level of care that is required for all Belgian Tervuren Rescue dogs.

Belgian Tervuren Rescue dogs may be located in foster homes all over the country.  Generally the program attempts to place the dogs locally, however, sometimes dogs are flown to their new homes.  The Belgian Tervuren Rescue President maintains a list of rescue dogs that are currently available for adoption.

What Is The Cost?

The adoption fee is $150 or the cost of expenses incurred on behalf of each individual dog. Adoptive homes are also responsible for all transportation costs required to re-locate the dog to its new home.
