BREED TYPE IN THE BELGIAN TERVUREN

A GUIDE FOR JUDGES

an educational web presentation

based upon the The AKC Belgian Tervuren Breed Standard  effective March 1, 2007*

see "what is different in the new standard" (for judges)

by the American Belgian Tervuren Club Judges Education Committee

This material has been prepared as an aid to the better understanding of good Belgian Tervuren breed type. The intent of this guide is to discuss and illustrate those points of the standard which deal with those qualities most unique to the breed, which are commonly referred to as "type". It is directed to judges and aspiring judges of the breed under the AKC breed standard who already have general knowledge of soundness in the Herding and Working breeds.

"Breed Type - A Guide For Judges" was originally published in 1980 in booklet form by the Judges Education Committee of the American Belgian Tervuren Club, Inc., consisting then of Edeltraud Laurin, chairperson; Karen Johnson, and Barbara Krohn, whose combined experience in the breed exceeds 115 years. This web presentation originated from the material contained in that booklet, and  is maintained by the judges education committee on an ongoing basis.

We have included pictures of many Tervuren. We will note for you which particularly good feature we are demonstrating. Other qualities seen in the picture may or may not be what breed specialists consider correct. However, you should know that all of the dogs pictured with positive traits do possess one outstanding and noteworthy common quality, and that is, "the look of the breed".

To shorten download times, this presentation is divided into several sections as outlined below. A selection list will appear on the bottom of each section, and you may go directly to any section at any time by clicking on the choice. However, to get the full benefit of understanding, it is best if you proceed through each section in the order they are presented.

These pages are set to be viewed at a display setting of 800 X 600, and are approximately 110 characters wide.  Use of a smaller setting will require extra effort (tab right) to see the right side.

We suggest that you start by printing the breed standard and use it as reference as you follow along. You can print it from the Breed Standard link below, then press your Browser's Back icon to return here.
